Lucknow, India : The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Department at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) has launched a dedicated Foot and Ankle Rehabilitation Clinic, aimed at providing comprehensive care for lower limb disorders across all age groups. The initiative was lauded by the Institute Director for its innovation and patient-centric approach.
The launch coincides with a remarkable success story of 42-year-old Sunita Verma from Barabanki, who had been struggling with chronic heel pain for two years. Simple daily activities like standing in the kitchen, visiting the market, or playing with her children had become agonizing. Despite using painkillers, ointments, and rest, her pain persisted.
Upon visiting SGPGI’s PMR department, a detailed clinical evaluation and musculoskeletal ultrasound revealed she was suffering from chronic plantar fasciitis, a degenerative condition of the plantar fascia commonly seen in women who stand for long periods.
The PMR team discussed regenerative treatment options with her, including ultrasound-guided Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. Using state-of-the-art ultrasound intervention, PRP was precisely injected into the affected fascia. Alongside, she underwent a comprehensive rehabilitation program involving stretching, foot strengthening, footwear modifications, and training in proper posture and walking.
Within six weeks, Sunita experienced complete relief from her morning heel pain. After three months, she could stand for long durations and resume household activities without discomfort. Follow-up ultrasounds confirmed improved tissue integrity and reduced inflammation.
The new Foot and Ankle Rehabilitation Clinic, based in the Apex Trauma Center, will operate every Friday. It is designed as a one-stop facility for diagnosis, evaluation, and management of foot and ankle disorders such as plantar fasciitis, bursitis, ankle arthritis, Achilles tendinopathy, ligament injuries, and diabetic foot complications.

The clinic emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, integrating precise diagnostics, biomechanical assessment, physiotherapeutic rehabilitation, and image-guided therapeutic interventions. Ultrasound-guided procedures allow accurate needle placement, minimal discomfort, enhanced safety, and rapid recovery. Advanced regenerative therapies like PRP and Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC) injections promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and provide promising solutions for chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Patients benefit from streamlined care under one roof, including diagnosis, imaging, and treatment, reducing multiple appointments and ensuring faster, effective interventions. The clinic’s rehabilitation focus is particularly advantageous for elderly patients, diabetic patients, and those with chronic injuries, helping prevent long-term complications.
Prof. Arun Srivastava, Head of the Apex Trauma Center, described the clinic as a major step toward comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with lower limb injuries and chronic foot and ankle conditions. Institute Director Prof. R.K. Dhiman congratulated the PMR team for this forward-thinking initiative, while Additional Medical Superintendent Prof. R. Harshvardhan praised the department’s dedication to integrating cutting-edge medical science with compassionate patient care.
Through this clinic, SGPGI aims to provide individualized, advanced care for foot and ankle disorders, improving mobility, functionality, and overall quality of life.
